Replace a cordless vacuum battery safely

Swapping the whole battery pack takes a few minutes on most of these vacuums. The main risk is a counterfeit or uncertified battery.

Check it's really the battery

  1. Wash the filters and clear any blockage. Both make the motor draw more power and shorten run time.
  2. Compare run time in normal mode, not MAX or Boost.
  3. Let a cold vacuum warm to room temperature. Dyson V11s switch off below 50°F, and V15s won't run below 41°F.
  4. Look up your model's light codes. A battery-fault light is a reason to replace the pack, or to contact the manufacturer if it's under warranty.

Dyson recommends running its online troubleshooting before buying a battery.

Avoid counterfeit and no-name packs

In January 2024 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned owners to stop using ZAUTNKN.INC replacement batteries for Dyson V6 vacuums, sold on Amazon for $15 to $40, after three fire reports and one smoke-inhalation report. The packs weren't compliant with the UL 1642 safety standard, and the seller didn't agree to a recall. Read the CPSC warning.

Dyson says only a genuine Dyson battery keeps the machine working as intended and the warranty intact. iRobot says aftermarket batteries can cause charging errors and void the warranty. If you buy elsewhere, choose a pack certified to a recognized battery safety standard from a seller you can trace, and be wary of prices far below the genuine part.

What not to do

  • Don't open a battery pack, replace cells or try to "reset" its electronics.
  • Don't charge or use a pack that is swollen, cracked, leaking, hot or smells of burning.
  • Don't use a charger that isn't made for your vacuum.
  • Don't put old lithium-ion packs in the trash or curbside recycling. Take them to a battery recycler or household hazardous waste site.
